In a recent interview with Phil Spencer, general manager of Microsoft Game Studios, he talks about Microsoft’s stand on the legal brawl between Silicon Knights and Epic Games and also about the future of Microsoft in a world that seems to have grown attached to casual gaming.
Spencer explains that Microsoft isn’t involved in the legal disputes between Silicon Knights and Epic Games and believes that the two figure it out by themselves. Microsoft works closely with them both, however, in developing games.
In the end, they want to make sure of “the future of Gears [of War] and the first iteration of Too Human.” At the same time he hopes that the dispute will only be seen as a “minor note in history” and that people will see how Too Human is a great game.
Later on the interview shifts to the studio Rare, which Microsoft acquired in 2002. Spencer talks about how Rare was formerly developing for Nintendo and how Microsoft wants to build on that expertise in “shorter session experiences” and “design innovation,” which may be a plus for Xbox Live Arcade in the future.
The expertise in the domain of Nintendo is what helped convince Microsoft to allow Rare to develop games for the Nintendo DS. On that note, he also mentions that Microsoft is addressing the market for casual games, mostly on Xbox Live.
