PS3, PSP - Image 1Recent sales numbers reveal that New Zealand remains as loyal as ever to Sony and its line of gaming platforms. PlayStation-branded products occupy the top three spots to solidify the Kiwi claim that theirs is the “PlayStation Nation.”

The Sony PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Portable hold the first three spots respectively in this PAL territory. The PS2 had 3,926 units sold in November to claim dominion above all platforms, followed by the Sony PS3 which leads the next-generation systems. The Sony PSP is New Zealand’s king of handheld gaming.

“Less than a year after launch, the PlayStation has been embraced by serious gamers and home entertainment enthusiasts alike, making the PS3 the top selling ‘next generation’ console in November 2007,” says Warwick Light, General Manager Sales and Marketing Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand.

“In fact, since its launch on 23 March 2007, the PS3 has been the top selling ‘next generation’ console overall, selling 15,172 units,” adds Light.

This development comes amidst the fact that the PS3 and the PSP are trailing competitors in their respective categories. PAL territories have been known to stick to trusted brands when it comes to purchasing consumer electronics.

The Sony PSP did well since launching in New Zealand and had its sales boosted when its slimmer and lighter version debuted. Sony expects sales to do even better in the country this December as the holiday season winds down.
