The NPD Group sales data results: Sony’s response
It’s interesting to hear what the big gaming companies have to say about the results of the NPD Group‘s December sales report. On one hand, Sony remarked that it had done quite well despite stiff competition. Sony has figures taken from NPD Group’s report to support the company’s claims. You can see them for yourselves right after the jump.
Despite not having performed quite as well as its competitors last December, Sony hasn’t given up the fight yet. The company still thinks the best is yet to come. This is according to Sony’s sales response via the NPD Group.
Sony says that it did quite all right considering the situation. The company has pointed to a total of US$ 714 million in hardware revenues generated by their PlayStation 2 and 3 consoles, a figure which reportedly surpassed that of Microsoft and Nintendo.
Furthermore, Sony’s hardware and software have reportedly gained momentum during the previous month. Consider the following:
- 798,000 PlayStation 3 units sold last month.
- Sales of the Sony PSP amounted to 1.1 million units last December.
- The PlayStation 2 likewise sold the same number of units as the PSP.
- The PS2 version of Guitar Hero 3 (PC, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360) sold 2.7 million units from October to December last year.
- PlayStation software revenue totalled US$822 million in December.
- Sony’s PlayStation platforms had the following titles in the top 10 list for December:
- Guitar Hero 3
- Madden NFL 08
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
2007 has come and gone, and Sony is now turning its sights toward doing well during the rest of the year. Whether it will be able to outperform its competitors is anybody’s guess, but one thing’s for sure: if the intense next-gen battles that we’ve seen during the past months are any consideration, then 2008 is going to be an interesting year for everyone.
