Eidos Interactive has been working on a Highlander-based video game of the same name for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the PC. Slated for launch within the year, the developers let slip a bit of information about the game.
According to the recent press release, players will be placed in the shoes of Owen MacLeod in this third person action adventure game.
As an Immortal, players have to master various tactics including using Owen as a conduit for fire and electricity, impaling yourself on an enemy’s weapon to disarm them, and even leaping from tall buildings to avoid getting your head cut off.
Players may be interested to know that they will eventually get the ability to upgrade Owen MacLeod’s skills once he’s taken another Immortals’ head. It might be interesting to know that this is pretty consistent with Highlander lore since the act of killing an Immortal transfers the knowledge and strength of the defeated to the victor.
The game uses the Unreal 3 Engine and has a script from David Abramowitz (a writer of the Highlander series). Hopefully, this means we’ll be treated to a game with next gen-graphics and an accurate portrayal of the Immortals.
Darren Barnett, Development Director of Eidos, described both the game and series, saying:
Highlander itself is a cult classic. Practically everyone has heard of it and we wanted to offer the first ever next-generation videogame of the franchise.
Having a central character that is immortal and has roamed the earth for 2000 years opens up so many gameplay opportunities in terms of story, environments, predicaments and enemies – Highlander is a thrilling adventure for both fans of the franchise and fans of explosive, fast-paced third person action games.
