Warhammer Development Diaries: the making of an epic backstory
We’ve read about the epic backstory that makes up Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning‘s lore, and we can’t help but wonder about the creative writing team behind it. Giving us an insight about how to churn out a good, never-ending tale is Lead Writer Matt Daniels, who also gives a few tips on how to write an epic. More details in the full article.
EA Mythic‘s Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Development Diaries is updated once again, and this time the spotlight is on Lead Writer Matt Daniels. He shed some light on the process of crafting WAR‘s epic backstory.
We’ve already read some of the backstories from WAR, and we have to admit, they’re quite a lot. So how did they manage to come up with a backstory of epic proportions? One important thing, according to Daniels, is that the backstory has to be layered. “It has to encompass the epic, but also the personal, and it has to join those layers clearly,” wrote Daniels in his Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Development Diary.
Also, since an MMORPG is an RPG that ideally shouldn’t end, the backstory should also accommodate perpetual conflict to keep the story, and the players, going. Of course, writing a never-ending story isn’t easy to do, and partly because of that reason Daniels and EA Mythic worked with the Games Workshop, a group that spent about 25 years writing about the Warhammer universe.
It’s never an easy feat, but with the game still in its early stages we can already see the fruits of their labors concerning WAR‘s backstory. From the stories King Byrrnoth Grundadrakk, Vampire Lord Neborhest, to the story behind Chaos God Tzeentch, we couldn’t help ourselves but marvel at the depth of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning‘s lore.
