It seems that Miami-based attorney Jack Thompson is in for quite the legal scuffle, as none other than the Florida Supreme Court has just laid down the hammer on the outspoken videogame violence critic. What’s the verdict?

That Thompson will have to hire another lawyer if he wants to file anything in the Florida Supreme Court. If he tries to do it himself, then he not only risks his case being thrown out, but also risk getting himself penalized. Ouch.

If you’ve been following Jack’s exploits in the legal scene, then you’d have known that the Court had already issued a show cause order that demanded Thompson to explain just why they shouldn’t issue the sanction itself. The lawyer rose to the occasion, but it seems that whatever he tried, the Court was set in its decision to penalize him.

The Court seems to have a good reason for the sanction. Here’s a quote from the order issued:

ThompsonÂ’s multiple responses are rambling, argumentative, and contemptuousÂ… What we cannot tolerate, however, is ThompsonÂ’s continued inability to maintain a minimum standard of decorum and respect for the judicial system to which all litigants, and especially attorneys, must adhere.

A thorough review of ThompsonÂ’s filings lead to one conclusion. He has abused the processes of the Court. Accordingly, the Clerk of this Court is hereby instructed to reject for filing any future pleadings, petitions, motions, documents, or other filings submitted by John Bruce Thompson, unless signed by a member in good standing of The Florida Bar other than himself.

You can’t get any more clear-cut than that. Here’s hoping, then, that this issue is resolved quickly and judiciously. Updates as we get them.
