Lucent is Suing Microsoft Over 360 Alleging it Breaches a Patent it Holds
According to the INQUIRER, Lucent is taking legal action regarding their patent 5,227,878 which was issued on July 13th 1993 called Adaptive Coding and Decoding of Frames and Fields of Video. Microsoft has infringed this patent by releasing the Xbox 360 console, which has MPEG2 tech – it’s alleged that it is a breach of the Lucent patent. The two giants crossed paths two years ago, but there was a typo with Lucent’s patent which led to the ruling for summary judgement of invalidity. The judge stated that the decision was without prejudice to Lucent starting a separate action. It looks like Lucent is taking the judge up on his words as they filed the action on the 28th of March in the southern district of California, San Diego.
