Ready at Dawn: life after Chains of Olympus, on PSP’s game library, more
Two months ago, Kratos made his first appearance on the PSP in God of War: Chains of Olympus. Unfortunately, it might also be his last. In a recent interview, Ready at Dawn‘s creative director remarked that the studio probably won’t be developing games for the PSP in the near future. The PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms were mentioned though, and they might shift their attention towards the consoles. More in the full article.
Now that God of War: Chains of Olympus is out and has made its mark as one of the best games on the PSP, what does Ready at Dawn have planned? Unfortunately for PSP gamers, whatever plans they have right now doesn’t involve the handheld.
The creative director, Ru Weerasuriya, remarked that Ready at Dawn studio developed God of War and Daxter for the PSP because they wanted to give the platform two great games, and to “push a platform [they] felt was still untapped.”
Now that they’ve accomplished that goal, the team has shifted their attention towards the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. They’re not closed to the PSP of course, but for now, it’s just not in the books. He also goes on to talk about the platform more, saying that:
I think that Sony, and other publishers for that matter, should take some chances on the system and allow for some big productions on the platform. More often than not, the PSP is seen as a secondary console with only a few great games developed exclusively for it.
And even if some of the games are exclusive, the execution is not all there and in the end, the player is the one who has to suffer for it. Ultimately, you reap what you sow, and if publishers are not willing to bank big on a platform, then the market is not going to see any expansion.
The PSP has the capacity to be a great platform to develop and be successful on for many teams out there so publishers also need to make some gambles on the types of projects they pick.
Again, whether the PSP, PS3, 360, Wii or DS, the systems will only be as successful as the games that are made for them and right now, not enough good stuff is available out there for some of the platforms.
