PlayStation 3 45nm Cell chip starts mass production next year: possible price drops?
Godzilla proved that size matters. But if being uber big has its advantages, so does being uber small. Come 2009, Sony and Toshiba will begin mass producing the 45nm Cell processor for the PlayStation 3. That means smaller models that run cooler, and on less electricity – but what I’m really looking forward to is a possible price drop.
Godzilla proved that size matters. But if being uber big has its advantages, so does being uber small. Come 2009, Sony and Toshiba will begin mass producing the 45nm Cell processor for the PlayStation 3.
A smaller Cell processor means smaller PS3 models – and since the 45nm Cell processor will run on 40% less power than the current 65nm Cell, it also means the console will run cooler, and on less electricity.
While all that is fine and dandy, what I’m really looking forward to are possible price drops, since producing the new processors will also cost less.
