David Cage: Heavy Rain trailer demo “not part of story”, checkpoints not recommended

Heavy Rain boxart - Image 1David Cage of Quantic Dream has given out a couple more information on the much-awaited Heavy Rain title. The most significant tip he’s got to offer to excited gamers out there: don’t use checkpoints as much for replayability.

Heavy Rain - Image 1A lot of people sure were impressed with the Heavy Rain trailer that Quantic Dream showed off at the recently-held Leipzig Games convention. And why not, it was looking really dapper and smooth, and all real-time rendered.

However, David Cage douses the excitement just a tiny bit today as he disclosed that what we saw back then isn’t exactly taken from the main story. “It’s really a bonus scene,” he explained. “It will probably be on the game disc.”

It’s highly likely that the scene they showed would be used for tutorials. After all, the clip seemed pretty introductory, with the lead character having just entered the house and discovered the bodies before meeting face to face with a character chasing her about with a knife.

And as for the reported checkpoints, Cage confirmed in an interview with CVG that they will indeed be present in the game. However, they’d rather that we don’t use them as much. Just go with the flow of the game, so to speak, and experience it as it unfolds.

Yes, there will be the opportunity for players to replay as much as they want from where they want, but we would really like to encourage them not to do so — to continue to play with one story bearing with the consequences of their actions.

As you may very well know, Heavy Rain has got over 60 scenes, all of which have multiple endings, true to the form of Choose-your-own-adventure. Now, we’re sure there will be times you won’t be satisfied with how your strategy is turning out in terms of the turn of events, but still, they say, just stick to the story you have. That’s when we’ll truly appreciate the game and its “pretty unique” story for what it is.
