Odyssey: Music games overtake sports and game console growth

Music overtakes sports - Image 1Music is all over the place nowadays – from MTV to MP3 – and it seems that it’s also all over the gaming industry. Market researcher, Odyssey, found that music games have overtaken sports games’ popularity. Find out how.

Music games have become more popular than sports games – this is based on the findings of market researcher Odyssey. According to Nick Donatiello, president and chief executive of Odyssey, music simulation titles such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero have driven an explosion of growth in the category, with Rock Band 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii) debuting at #3 on the list of the top US games in September.

Odyssey found that 65% of gamers play action games. This is followed by music games with 58%, and 50% for sports games. The relatively new category is already on its way to the top.

In a bird’s eyeview, we can see light, easy-to-learn, easy-to-play games shooting up the charts. Music game simulators make for great user interface and unique gameplay options. Peripherals have allowed players to be more involved with their games. It’s not surprising at all that the Wii is enjoying the success it’s having right now.

There seems to be a demand for games that are less work and more play. This attribute actually caters to a much larger market. Some games tend to demand too much time and effort, and gamers want to put the “game” back into gaming.
