Ray Maguire: PS3’s competition “past its peak”

Games Industry got in touch with Sony UK’s managing director Ray Maguire, who notes that the PS3 is now hitting its stride, and competing formats are already past their peak.
Maguire admits that the company takes its time in bringing products to the market, but adds that, “When we do, we bring you the most powerful gaming platform ever to hit – and it will be something that will be around for a very long time,” he said. “It’s nowhere near even halfway through its lifecycle, and I could argue that some other competing formats are on their way down right now.”
Maguire also says that it’s difficult to meet the expectations of consumers who want immediate results, but Sony has always risen to that challenge. “What we haven’t worked out how to do yet is have a child in less than nine months,” he jests.
With the upcoming release of Home, an online social networking service, Maguire stresses that it’s crucial that it’s release on time, rather than an earlier but premature release then patched at a later date. “We have to make sure that things are born at the right time, that the infrastructures are right and are tested, and that they actually work,” he said. “It’s one of the things that PlayStation has been known for – a plug-and-play mentality, rather than a patch-patch mentality.”
While gamers would prefer to get their hands on the latest software ASAP, Maguire makes a simple, yet strong point: “Getting it right is more important than getting it out quick,” he said.
