What could have been: unreleased gun controller patent for PSP
You’ve heard of the PSP-controlled car, right? Here’s another PSP accessory that never quite got off the drawing board: a gun controller accessory for the PSP-1000.

Yep, that’s a gun controller accessory for the Sony handheld. If you look closely, you’ll see the MadCatz logo on the guncon images. The third-party accessory designer isn’t on the patent though.
The guncon would have let users mount their PSP on top of it, with movement being handled via motion-sensing. Pressing the buttons on the guncon would send commands to the PSP via IR. The guncon was to have built-in rumble as well. Power would have been provided by four AA batteries, although it could also draw power from the PSP itself by way of a USB connection.
Obviously, the PSP guncon never made it to production, but it would have been way cool if it did. It was obviously made to work with the PSP-1000, but the PSP-3000‘s screen brightness would have helped to enable outdoor use. I’m a bit skeptical about the strength of that PSP mounting brace, though. I wouldn’t want to see my PSP flying to the ground after a particularly fierce multiplayer FPS bout.
What do you think, guys? If somebody actually came out with this thing (with a few changes of course, especially to the IR input system), would you buy it?
