Stacked Volumetric Optical Disc (SVOD)
Hitachi Maxell have developed a new optical storage technology. The stacked volumetric optical disc (SVOD) which is roughly the size of a dvd yet much thinner is a two sided recordable disc that holds a capacity of 9.47 GB on each side. Plus the company has developed a high capacity optical storage system that will allow you to accommodate 100 of these optical discs in one compact cartridge measuring 63.5 thickness, 13.3 cm width and 16.1 cm depth. You can imagine the amount of space you would be able to save.
Norio Ota, Fellow and Chief Engineer of Hitachi Maxell commented; “It is possible that the product will be provided for consumer use, too.”
Normally CD and DVD are made using a injection molding but this method can not be used to make discs as thin as the SVOD. So Hitachi Maxell adopted a polycarbonate sheet which is used in a protective payer of the Blue-ray discs. During the initial eight second stage process the sheet is heat pressed to get the land and groove patterns on the surface.
The SVOD should be released for commercial use as early as the beginning of 2007 and the price will be around $340.30 USD for the cartridge holding 100 discs.
