Sony has called the Australian release of the PSP Go a “soft launch” amid low sales numbers. In its first week, the PSP Go managed to move only around 1,000 units in the region.

“Clearly we haven’t done massive numbers but it’s not something that we’re concerned about … because there are still some issues that we need to work through,” said Michael Ephraim, managing director of SCE Australia and New Zealand, in a phone interview with The Age.

Ephraim clarified that the handheld’s weekly sales figure exceeded 1,000, but only “slightly”. He also outlined Sony’s future plans — the comic download service, the Play TV accessory, and the upcoming movie download store — as reasons to pick up a Go when they go live.

“I suppose the applications are going to catch up with the device … the connectability to the PS3 and those other applications will start making this device even more viable,” Ephraim said.
