It went on to sell more than 50 million copies worldwide, spanning across multiple platforms and spawning shameless clones. For its tenth birthday, PopCap Games will be spending the next ten months celebrating the franchise’s milestone.

“When Brian Fiete, John Vechey and I built the game ten years ago, we had no grand aspirations for it or PopCap,” said Jason Kapalka, co-creator to Bejeweled and co-founder of PopCap Games. “…we were trying to survive as a company during the depths of the dot-com collapse. Little did we know we’d still be selling copies of Bejeweled a decade later!”

Originally called Diamond Mine, Microsoft advised them to make the name change to avoid conflicts with a similarly named game, Diamond Mines. Bejeweled is now a household gaming name and is to blame for countless hours on the PC, neglected tasks, and even office memos.

The ten-month celebration will include contests on the official site, as well as competitions on its Facebook iteration.
