Back in December, we told you about “Chaos Rings”, a trademark spotted in Europe filed by Square Enix. The prolific RPG publisher has now announced what it was all about, and it’s an RPG coming only to the iPhone – Chaos Rings.
“I was surprised at how smooth the 3D graphics were,” said the article from Famitsu, as translated by 1Up. “I honestly didn’t think that the iPhone was capable of such pretty 3D visuals. The controls are also innovative – you can touch and drag your finger anywhere on the screen to move your characters around. It doesn’t rely on using one hand over the other, so it’s really easy to play.”
“Rings” would actually refer to the Arca Arena, where the game’s story will revolve around. Within those rings, two five-person teams will fight it out to the death. Each team will follow its own storyline, but it will all converge towards the end. No one knows how they got there or what they’re supposed to do, except for the fact that they were summoned there to compete for the reward of eternal life.
Having released the earliest Final Fantasies into the App Store, Square Enix is looking to establish its RPG stronghold into another platform. The art and visuals was handled by veteran FF artist Yusuke Naora, and it’s looking to add one more game to a genre that’s still a minority on the iPhone, a serious, non-port RPG.
