Apple has now changed its mind and allowed the Epic Games Store iOS app to be launched in the EU. This is just hours after reports that Apple had refused to approve it. Epic Games complained to Apple early on Friday that it had been rejected twice for its Epic Games Store iOS submission. Apple’s rejection of Epic Games Store for iOS was characterized as “arbitrary, obstructive and in violation” with the EU’s Digital Markets Act. Apple changed its mind about the situation later that day and approved the Epic Games Store. Apple delayed correction request Earlier reports confirmed that Epic was largely in compliance with EU app review guidelines. The objectionable elements were a download icon and its related copy. This was against rules that prohibit developers from creating apps that could confuse consumers into thinking that the app’s elements were Apple-made. Epic defended itself by insisting that it used the same naming standards across all platforms. Epic also claimed that it adhered to standard conventions when creating buttons for iOS apps. AppleInsider has confirmed that Epic’s app for the marketplace has been approved. Apple has also asked Epic if it can fix the buttons for a future submission. Apple has allowed the app to continue with the questionable button issue because it is a relatively minor problem. Epic will need to fix them before submitting the app again for review. Apple’s green light, which acknowledges that a minor graphical issue doesn’t mean the end of the universe, helps Epic move closer to launching their own iOS marketplace in Europe. It may not make a big difference to Epic’s timeline. Epic’s schedule is not known. The app is the main interface but it also needs to have a backend that handles sales, downloads and other essential functions. Epic stated that it would still bring the store to iOS in the “next couple of months” when the complaint was filed. Apple’s approval may help reduce this time, but the exact amount is not known. AppleInsider contacted Epic to get a comment.
