In a recent interview, Apple’s Jenny Chen revealed that both Smart Script and Math Notes for iPadOS 18 are rooted in Apple technology. Math Notes, a new feature in iPadOS 18, will not only recognize and solve a handwritten equation or sum, but will also do so in the user’s handwriting. Smart Script smoothes out your handwriting intelligently so that you can retain the uniqueness of your writing while making it more readable. In a recent YouTube interview, engineering manger Jenny Chan and product manager Ty Jordan said that these features were the culmination of other things Apple has been working for a long period of time. Subscribe to AppleInsider YouTube”This actually builds on the technology that we have been building for many years,” said Chen. “With Scribble [handwriting identification], we spent a great deal of time working on recognizing [text ]…, but, in essence, we were able recognize your handwriting and turn it into typed texts.” “Math Notes takes the technology of Scribble to the next step, not only in recognizing handwriting but also being able synthesize text similar to it,” she continued. Ty Jordan said Apple’s ability to recognize and emulate text also allowed it to manipulate handwriting, giving it some of the features found in typewritten text. “If you tap and hold the pencil, it will move words around in your paragraph to give you more space,” said Jordan. You can even paste typed text in the middle a paragraph as your own handwritten version. “Now you can do a lot of things that we normally do with typed text,” he added, “which is really cool.” Math Notes and Smart Script will be part of iPadOS 18 which will officially launch in the fall. Apple has released a public beta and is now testing it with developers.
