Kuo: Apple may certainly increase phone 16 directions after all
Apple and its suppliers are busy preparing the iPhone 16 to debut in the fall. Ming-Chi Kuo, despite recent reports that Apple planned to increase its 2024 iPhone shipment by a large amount, has today cast doubt on these claims.
Despite rumors that iPhone 16 orders have increased after WWDC from time to time, recent earnings calls by two key Apple suppliers (TSMC & Largan), have hinted at the possibility that iPhone 16 orders have not increased.
TSMC: The growth in unit sales was not sudden.
Largan: This year’s orders for high-end models are similar to those from last year.
I understand that some suppliers have seen a rise in iPhone 16 orders, but from an EMS/assembly point of view, the iPhone 16 order for 2H24 has not seen much of a change (about 87 millions units), still slightly below the 2H23 iPhone 15 order (about 91 units).
This is Kuo’s interpretation of what these two Apple suppliers reported. It’s still noteworthy, though. Apple’s reported 10% increase would have impacted TSMC in particular. If it hasn’t changed much from the original expectations, then perhaps those reports were incorrect. Largan’s statement isn’t as credible as it seems to be focused only on the high-end Pro model. Even if Apple’s Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro are expected to sell at the same level as last year’s Pro models there is still room for a boost in the base iPhone 16As we reported previously, all iPhone 16 models will receive the new A18 processor. This will be an important marketing tool for users who are interested in Apple Intelligence, as the base iPhone 15 last year did not support AI. A powerful new processor with Apple Intelligence could still be a compelling reason for many customers to upgrade, especially if it is available with the lower priced iPhone 16. The fall will soon arrive, so we won’t need to wait long to find out what Apple has planned. FTC: We use auto-affiliate links that earn us income.
