So much for being the most valuable company in the world. A settlement check for the iPhone “batterygate scandal” bounced, allegedly due to insufficient funds. Maybe the sales declines in China are more serious than we thought. Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri may have to admit to a devastatingly empty coffer when they announce Apple’s earnings in 2024. According to Florida’s First Coast News newspaper, Clay County resident Desiree McNeill received some bad news about her credit union. She was one of many iPhone users included Apple’s settlement in the so-called Batterygate case. Checks from that case began being sent in January 2024. McNeil’s check for $92.17 was returned unpaid due to insufficient funds. The key word here is “when.” McNeil deposited the check, titled “In Re Apple Inc Device Performance Litigation”, on April 1, 2024. The check was dated Jan 3, 2024. McNeil said that by April 3, her credit union had returned the check due to insufficient funds. They said the litigants hadn’t paid it. First Coast News’ crack team confirmed for the first time that Apple was indeed sending such checks. It should have been easy to do, since they had reported it themselves. Then they contacted the credit cooperative. Apparently, the check was too old. Anthony Austin, a news anchor, reported that the front of the cheque stated that the check would be void on April 18th. Austin was directed by the credit union to the check issuer, Huntington Bank. They then passed him on to an administrator of the account. For now, the hot investigation is over.
