Hands on: All innovative with CarPlay in apps 18
CarPlay is getting new features in iOS 18
CarPlay gets a slew of new features in iOS 18. These include accessibility enhancements, Siri improvements, wallpapers and more! Here are some of our favorite additions to Apple’s dashboard interface. We’ve been testing iOS 18 beta and have delved into CarPlay to look for new features and improvements. There are many changes coming for existing users. But there are also some news about the next-generation update. CarPlay in iOS 18. Siri Apple’s digital Assistant is getting a major makeover thanks to Apple Intelligence. However, CarPlay’s updates are more minimal. There’s a brand new interface when you ask for sports scores or weather. It is compact and in the middle of screen, with more graphics. Score of Guardians in CarPlayChecking the score of the Guardians displays each team’s logo, where they are currently in the game, as well as the current score. It looks similar to the Live Activity widget on Apple Watch. Siri is now bilingual with iOS 18. You can now converse in multiple languages with Siri. This is particularly useful for messages that require you to switch between languages. Subscribe to AppleInsider YouTube for vehicles without CarPlay. A new feature helps improve Siri’s sound quality. If you connect a car without CarPlay via Bluetooth to Settings, you will see new Siri options. It can route audio via the media source, and sound much better. This is a common complaint among those who do not use CarPlay. Updated Siri icon inspired by Apple IntelligenceSiri also has a new icon within the Settings app, which looks like it was inspired by Apple Intelligence, with bright colors and a lighter background. CarPlay in iOS18: Messages Siri is also getting a new look. It will display your contact’s picture next to their names. The cancel, change and send buttons are still located below the image and the name. Profile pictures are available in the Messages App and Notifications. If you launch the Messages App, these photos will be carried over. It makes the app more graphical, and less text-heavy. This is good for the car. CarPlay in iOS 2018: Wallpapers Apple releases new wallpapers almost every year. There are four different designs, available in both light and darker hues. The new wallpapers are identical to the ones that come with iOS 18. The colors are grey, blue, yellow, and violet. This can be set from the Settings app in your vehicle. If you set it to automatic, they will automatically change from light to darkness. Apple has also removed some older wallpapers. CarPlay in iOS 18 – Accessibility Apple has always placed accessibility features at the forefront of its products. iOS 18 extends these features to CarPlay. The first is a collection color filters. These filters will help those who are color blind or have difficulty seeing. It will tint the entire display based on which one you select. There are several new color filters in iOS 18 for CarPlay. There’s even an option to go greyscale. Three levels of intensity can be selected. There is also a new bold option, which is separate from the color filters. This bolds all text on the system, making it easier for users to read. Voice Control allows users to navigate the system by simply speaking. You can use the system without saying Siri to select a button or scroll. It is a very easy way to use CarPlay without having to hold the phone. Sound recognition is the final feature. If you enable this feature, CarPlay will alert if it hears sirens or horns honking in the vicinity. CarPlay in iOS18: Next-gen CarPlay One of the biggest questions surrounding CarPlay concerns the next-generation version. Apple announced CarPlay years ago, yet we have seen very little adoption. Apparently, the first vehicles will arrive by the end this year. However, they are only luxury models. Even fewer mass-market cars have been announced. Apple has shared new interface designs for the next-generation CarPlay. Apple did make some updates at WWDC, such as making it easier for automakers to implement. Apple is making concessions by allowing interfaces such as punch-through apps. Punch-through apps display the native CarPlay UI for parts such as the rear-view cameras. This reduces the burden on car makers, as they don’t have to create an entirely new native experience. Instead, they can recycle what they currently have. They can also use new alerts, such as when an EV is finished charging. These alerts are displayed in the same format of other CarPlay notifications. Hopefully, with some of these changes we’ll hear more about future vehicles. The latest update to CarPlay is available for both developers and public beta testers.
