Delta’s CEO has criticized Microsoft as a platform that is particularly vulnerable, while suggesting Apple is more secure. Many companies were looking for blame when a faulty software update in mid-July brought the internet to a standstill, causing everything to stop, from flight management to point-of purchase. Microsoft and CrowdStrke were largely to blame. Flight companies such as American Airlines United and Delta were among the loudest affected. They had to ground flights while their systems were brought back online. Delta CEO Ed Bastian spoke out against Microsoft in a recent interview on CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box’ while simultaneously praising Apple. Bastian responded, “We must” when asked if Delta will reconsider its use of Microsoft in the future. My impression is that [Microsoft] is probably the most fragile platform in this space… When was the last major outage that you heard of at Apple? Bastian dodged the question when the interviewer asked if Apple’s lack of outages was because the system isn’t as widely used. Delta is currently suing both Microsoft and CrowdStrike in order to recover its alleged $500,000,000 profit loss due technical problems. Delta has integrated Apple products directly or indirectly into different parts of its business. Delta was the first airline that used Apple’s Business Chat to assist customers. In December 2023 a TikToker found that a newer Delta flight allows you to directly connect your AirPods – or any Bluetooth headphones – to the inflight entertainment system.
