Myth Roundup: What the 2025 phone 17 community may bring to the table

Both the standard and Pro versions of iPhone 17 have a similar appearance.
The 2025 iPhone 17 is still a ways off, but rumors have been particularly active in the past few months. Here’s a look at what the 2025 iPhone line-up may hold. Rumors have been circulating about the iPhone 17 since about a year. The future is still uncertain, but there’s a rumor that a model that has been underperforming could be replaced by a new design. Analysts and leakers predict that Apple will launch four new iPhone models in September 2025: iPhone 17, the Slim or Air, and the iPhone 17 Plus. There would be standard and Plus models, as well as Pro and Pro Max versions. If rumors are true, the lineup could undergo major changes. The main change for the four main models would be the possible extinction of the Plus model. In July, one of the most prominent voices in the rumor-mill said that the iPhone 17 Plus would be killed off in favor of the iPhone Slim, a new, thinner model. Ming-Chi Kuo said that the Plus-size iPhones only account for less than 10% in any given year, so it is the best time to remove them. What the iPhone 17 Slim might look likeIn August, an anonymous leaker speculated on the model which they called the iPhone Air. This name is vaguely plausible because it’s used on the iPad and MacBook lines. The leaker was the only person to use the name. All others seem to have gone with the Slim name. Previous rumors also mentioned the possibility that it would be a very slim model, but speculation does not give an exact measurement. The thinnest iPhone currently is the iPhone SE, which measures 0.29 inches. The thinnest iPad, however, is the M4 iPad Pro, measuring 0.20 inches. The rumor mill seems to agree that the iPhone Slim is a standard model. However, it could still get a Pro-like feature. It may be strengthened with a “titanium and aluminum alloy frame” to keep the Slim sturdy and resistant to bending. iPhone 17’s Apple-designed A19 chip At the heart of the iPhone experience is the Apple-designed Apple chip, which is upgraded every year to bring users new features. Apple’s “Pro” variant means that there is a big difference in performance and function between the standard model and the Pro model. This would be the A19 Pro and A19 for the iPhone 17 generation. While there are no rumors about performance or features, TSMC’s manufacturing is a topic that is often discussed. TSMC announced in 2022 that it planned to mass produce 2-nanometer chips by 2025, which coincided with the A19. Reports circulated in December 2023 that the iPhone 17 Pro was the first device to use the technology. The switch to a smaller manufacturing process has multiple benefits. It also allows for a smaller chip, which can save space in the smartphone. Die-shrinkage can also improve thermal management and power efficiency. Processor wafers (TSMC)However, while it was reported in July that TSMC had begun trial production of 2-nanometer chip, another stated the process wouldn’t be ready until 2025. This rumor is based on a Weibo leaker. There’s no guarantee it’s true. It’s hard to believe that something so important could be rumored without any other corroborating information. Memory is also expected to improve performance, at least on the Pro models. Analyst Jeff Pu predicted that Apple would increase the memory in Pro models. The iPhone 15 lineup has 8GB of memory. The iPhone 16 is expected to have the same. Pu, however, says that the Pro models can go up to 12GB. The added memory should improve multitasking and allow for more powerful applications. It is reasonable to expect a memory increase every few years with iPhone upgrades. It’s another thing to decide if it is right to believe that the iPhone 17 will have 12GB of memory. iPhone 17’s thinner and faster Wi-Fi motherboard Continuing with the theme of internal components, it is possible that the iPhone 17 will benefit from a new, lighter motherboard. This could be achieved by using advanced technology. Apple will use Resin Coated Copper in the motherboard, according to Ming-Chi Kuo. This is expected to happen in October 2023. It is a laminate material that replaces a bonding layer with a resin-deposited sheet, and uses laser ablation for carving the copper. It is believed that this will make the thickness of the motherboard smaller and drilling easier because it does not contain fiberglass. Apple’s production line will be able to cut costs and save time. This will improve the supply chain for Apple, but it is unlikely to affect iPhone prices. Apple is working on its own Wi-Fi chip but it’s unlikely to make it into the iPhone 17 despite Apple having worked on it. Industry sources have stated that despite investing heavily in its wireless connectivity projects, the iPhone 17 won’t be available by December 2023. iPhone 17 Displays The iPhone display has a consistent pattern in terms of size and variety. There are two variants, 6.1-inch and 6.67-inch. This may increase in the iPhone 17 range. Ross Young, of DSCC, said in April that the iPhone 17 Plus would have a smaller display than the iPhone 15 Plus. However, Young didn’t go into detail. Kuo also said in his report that the Plus would be replaced by the Slim that the model will be larger than the standard, but smaller than the Plus. He also said that it would be 6.6 inches and have a 2,740 by 1260 resolution. Apple may be planning some display changes for the iPhone 17Along with the size variations and rumors, it has also been claimed that the displays would be anti-reflective as well as even more scratch resistant. Corning is working to create a glass that is even harder than Ceramic Shield. This was revealed by a March leaker. This may cause finger oil to appear more easily on the display. Another DSCC report from April claimed that the always on display technology of the Pro model will be available to all models. The assertion made by a Weibo leaker back in July, that the ProMotion feature of the Pro models would also be available on the non-Pro models, is a little less credible. This is unlikely, as ProMotion was one of Apple’s main reasons for consumers to purchase a Pro iPhone model. iPhone 17 cameras Keen photography enthusiasts may be able to reap some big benefits from their 2025 iPhone upgrade. Apple is said to have enabled adjustable apertures on the cameras of at least one iPhone 17 version, according to reports from July. Apple’s inclusion in the iPhone 15 Pro Max of the tetraprism lenses will likely make it the most expensive model. By adjusting the aperture, photographers can play with bokeh – the blurry background you see in portraits. It may also be possible to focus in-camera instead of computing it afterwards. Renderings of cameras on iPhonesAs for Apple’s TrueDepth front camera, several reports have claimed that the 24-megapixel sensor will be used. This would be a double of the 12-megapixel version in the iPhone 15 According to one report from August, Apple will switch from a plastic lens with five elements to a six element version as part the resolution switch. Not all models will see camera improvements. Kuo has suggested that the iPhone Slim could only have one camera and not multiple sensors. This makes sense, as the thin body of the model will make it difficult to integrate internal components. Something has to give.
