Procreate, the company behind iPad’s popular art app, has released a statement stating that it does not plan to include generative AI into its products. The debate about generative AI has heated up, with many artists fearing that their work is being used to fuel prompt-driven images creators. Microsoft Copilot, for example, has repeatedly shown that it is able to create images that feature a lot of copyrighted content. Adobe has also announced that its terms give it full access to the content of its users, but it clarified that it does not “train Firefly Gen AI on customer content.” Procreate, in response, has released a public statement stating its stance in response to companies rushing to add generative image features to their products. “Generative AI is ripping out the humanity of things.” The technology is based on theft and will lead us to a barren, future,” reads the statement. “We believe machine learning has a lot to offer, but we don’t agree with the direction generative AI is taking.” The company clarifies its stance regarding user privacy, noting that they do not track the user’s activity in the app or have access to their art. Generative AI uses large databases of text, images, videos, and data to create data based on a user’s prompt. This type of AI uses large datasets of material that is scraped off the internet. Much of this material is unethically sourced and contains copyrighted materials. It claims that it is the only AI trained ethically and legally.
