A closer look at MGS4’s gameplay

So, we saw the trailers. We saw the screenshots. We got a little bit of details but not really enough to make us grasp at least the oncoming of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot. True to Hideo fashion (if you have been following Hide-chan radio), he brought his radio cast and Akio Otsuka (the voice of Solid Snake) to give curious fans what to expect with the game. As said before, the Octocam plays a crucial role in the game as it completely blends you to the terrain. More so, CQC also makes a comeback. But what else are we to see in the game? Well, the Kojima Production show in the Konami booth gives us more details on what to expect from the game.

Terrain

As said before, the setting for Metal Gear Solid 4 is somewhere in the Middle East, in a battlefield for industrial and capitalist warfare. Kojima says that people should expect that this is no longer a game about sneaking into territory but rather using your tactical experience to win a war. Hence, as a battlefield, gone are jungle terrains and long climbs.

The landscape easily switches from the interior to the exterior; a small step can easily make you visible to your enemy. Trenches and ruins are the most common terrains that you will encounter in the game. The Octocam at its highest level can give you a chance to fully conceal yourself much like the stealth cam weÂ’ve encountered before. But if unused properly, then Johnny Sasaki might just catch you.

More on the terrain and also three-dimensional battle and weapons and Mark II info after the jump!

But using the Octocam all the time is childÂ’s play. Kojima suggests that you use the terrain itself to help you get away from those annoying genome soldiers. Hiding and creating attacks in the shadows help you to be less visible to your enemy. Just by being under or out of the light helps your cover dramatically.

Three Dimensional Battle

They havenÂ’t fully revealed the extent of the radar for the game, but Kojima states that you canÂ’t be really relaxed in the game.

In his show, he talks of a three dimensional battle made possible only through the creation of a full 3D access to the body. He shows a model wearing a 3D suit and he explains that this suit allowed them to draft a greater 3D render, allowing a better design for battles. The stages are designed for attacks to come from all places. Hence, people attacking you may not just be the people coming in right in front of you. They may come from above, behind, or even below you. With the terrain, it could be quite difficult. I guess they should have a very, very easy mode this time around.

Camera angles in the game help you see this three dimensional world more carefully. Based on the screens, there are first person and wide angles available to you. It might be as varied as subsistence or it could give us a little more for fanfare

Weapons and Mark II

Well, the trailer and the screens has shown us some crowd favorites such as the SOCOM and the sniper rifle. However, Otacon doesnÂ’t fail to give his war buddy another toy to play with. Meet Metal Gear Mark II, a small toy that aids the geriatric Snake in battle.

So far, we donÂ’t know who controls Mark II. Hopefully, the players can get a hold of him. Then again, a random help from Otacon would give Snake some rest in battle. It appears in previous trailers that this is how Otacon keeps direct contact with Snake. But now, even Mark II can pose a threat to anyone coming their way. Mark II can sting enemies at the crotch with an electric bolt.

More so, there is now the infamous barrel, which has consequently changed the ever powerful box. Snake can run around the place with a barrel, granted that no one notices him dashing around. Well, he could always just roll around.

The gameplay seems to be set already. As of current, Hideo is really just thinking of conditions to use this gaming experience. For this endeavor, Hideo puts emphasis on reality, fleshing out the reality of war unto the PS3. In all honesty, KojimaÂ’s just drafting a perfect goodbye to this legendary hero. Better late than a half-baked game, Kojima!
