A first trailer of Red Steel multiplayer mode

Red SteelRed Steel is one of Ubisoft‘s big launch titles for Wii (Americans can expect it November 19; it’ll be out early December for the rest of the world), and its multiplayer mode has now been revealed in the form of a trailer. The trailer showed four people (“excellent” acting there, hehe) “playing” Red Steel.

The katana-geeks here were disappointed that it only showed the firearms side of the gameplay (as you know, Red Steel features both sword-fighting and shooting). But it’s a good video.

Red Steel was one of the first games for the Wii to be heavily marketed, and a lot of news was released: at the time, we were impressed by the immersive nature of the controls – if you twist your controller, your weapon twists as well – and this trailer shows that.

We didn’t see any AI here, so we’re not sure if you can have multiplayer mode with bots thrown in (for added fun), because bots would be nice if you’re a noob and still trying to get the hang of the Wiimote (it is a launch title; few of us who will try this game are “experts” on the Wii remote). We’ll have to wait and see – there might be more videos; as Matt Casamassina (the guy some of you think is Perrin Kaplan’s boyfriend-to-be, which is so not true) said at IGN (where we got this video – thanks, IGN!) that this is only the first trailer of the multiplayer mode in action. (It’s Ubisoft; they’re real good when it comes to marketing and releasing videos.)

One thing you should notice: these people are waving their arms about even though the screen has been divided into four parts. No, just because your character’s only in one-fourth of the screen, it doesn’t mean that you have to control your actions to be one-fourth of your normal movement.

That’s good design: the Wii won’t be much fun if its games aren’t intuitive.
