A look at Blu-ray’s Profile 1.1 and the picture-in-picture feature

Blu-ray is getting set to take an exclusive feather out of HD-DVD’s cap with the upcoming arrival of Profile 1.1, the next iteration of Blu-ray playback. Profile 1.1, which will soon be released into the market via a few soon-to-release movies, includes the HD-DVD staple picture-in-picture feature.

Sony has already been laying down the groundwork for Profile 1.1. The most recent firmware update for the PlayStation 3 home video game console included full Profile 1.1 support, and Daily Game was able to test it out thanks to a Sony-provided copy of Resident Evil: Extinction, one of the movies which will feature Profile 1.1 support.

According to Daily Game, activating the picture-in-picture feature is just like activating a commentary track. Users just have to choose the option from the special features menu and they can sit back and enjoy the movie. Of course, since Profile 1.1 is just starting to get integrated into Blu-ray, there were a few issues that Daily Game encountered.

For one, Daily Game reports that the audio switches from 5.1 surround to two-channel stereo when the picture-in-picture feature is turned on. This occurs even if the material in the smaller window had no audio track at all. Keep in mind that this was tested only on the PS3 as Daily Game did not have a Profile 1.1-enabled Blu-ray player on hand.
