A Successful First Run For PAX Guild Wars Event 2006

The first Guild Wars Live event opened successfully last August 25 at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Bellevue, Washington. Sponsored by ArenaNet, two events were run concurrently, namely the Guild Wars Live event and the Guild Wars 10k Arena.

The aim of the game culture celebration was to primarily bring the best offering to the shows through a one-of-a-kind-competition where each and every PAX attendee gets to play. And play they all did. The flow of the program was simple enough, with players choosing a faction (either Jurzick or Luxon) to ally with. For every station that they venture into, there awaits various challenges to test their abilities. For every successfully completed challenge, the players then earn points for their chosen faction. The running tally of points from all players for each faction are then displayed on a large map.

The next day, August 26, 10K Arena consisted of qualifying rounds in sealed 4v4 matches, with a cap of 64 players. Match after match, teams played against each other and rotating out. At the end of the day, teams with the most points qualified for the Sunday finals.

The event may be considered a huge success as it garnered enthusiastic response from the attendees on its first run. Players not only limited themselves to the game booths, but also toured the whole of PAX, thereby generating widespread interaction and movement throughout the Expo. Scattered around also were NPCs, or non-player-characters, which basically were info sources regarding a quest. The NPCs were largely staffed by volunteers from ArenaNet.

Well, there you have it. So far, that’s what we gathered on the happenings from the PAX Guild Wars Events. We’ll make sure to keep you posted on how the finals went and, hopefully next time, we’ll get to go ourselves.
