A White Knight’s Tale

TGSTry to imagine this: a giant tortoise carrying one whole city on its back fighting one giant white knight, with an equally giant black alter-ego. Pretty exciting, huh? Level-5 thought so as well. And seeing the need for extreme graphical prowess with this project, the third-party video game developer went with Sony.

Just a few moments back, we reported on the mysterious, super-sized RPG being developed for PS3. Not wanting further charades and guessing games, Level-5 President Akihiro Hino decided to confirm and give information on Shirokishi Monogatari (White Knight Story). To start things off, this fantasy RPG revolves around the story of a boy who found an ancient artifact that allows him to transform into the giant White Knight (around 7 meters in height).

According to Hino, the original concept was to have the boy stand on top of the giant. They reckoned that would require at the very least a 20-meter giant. The size discrepancy made them revamp the whole plan. Aside from the boy, other standard sized characters include knife-wielding heroine, a magic-casting elderly knight and a small race that makes a living out of  providing transportation and selling energies emitted by giant enemy creatures.

Level 5Furthermore, Hino himself is producing the title. He is mostly proud about the realism they’ve already achieved regarding visuals and gameplay. Also, White Knight Story veers away from standard “attack/magic/item/flee” menus. In this game, function palettes are prepared prior to battle. It is in these palettes that you put your arsenal of attacks (be it a simple kick or an elaborate spell).

Despite this many information about White Knight Story, the game is still far from perfection. We expect though to see more of Akihiro Hino’s giant pet project in the coming TGS.
