Aaron Greenberg: Microsoft and Nintendo won in 2008, expects PS3 price cut
Aaron Greenberg shares a few words with G4TV and lets us in on a little more PS3-sniping, and more citing of figures that the Xbox 360 and Wii have that the PS3 does not. What’s more, he expects Sony to drop the price of their console if they want to stay competitive. More info after the jump.
Aaron Greenberg shares a few words with G4TV and lets us in on a little more PS3-sniping, and more citing of figures that the Xbox 360 and Wii have that the PS3 does not. The figures they’ve gotten say one thing loud and clear: they did great in 2008, the PS3 didn’t.
“A lot of people have asked us how 2008 went, and there was a lot of anxiety about the economy retail spending and all that. We saw reports of the worst holiday spending in six years. WhatÂ’s very fortuitous for us is that, as a category, video games have done pretty well,” he said. It won’t be the first time we’ll hear about this, but the sales figures really smile in their favor.
So we think that weÂ’re one of those industries that since consumers are staying in for entertainment, looking for gifts that the whole family can enjoy, weÂ’ve benefited. “We” by the way – thatÂ’s us and Nintendo.
What’s more, he expects that Sony will have to drop the price of their console if they want to keep up. “We expect Sony will have to drop price in order to remain competitive in the market. I think they obviously struggled this holiday. I think we saw it in the November sales results, and I think weÂ’ll see it again,” he said. “You know in the current economy trying to sell a console twice the price of your competitors is tough. Especially when youÂ’re not really able to differentiate in value, if you donÂ’t have more games, and if you donÂ’t have the bigger online community.”
Says Aaron Greenberg:
So yeah, I wouldnÂ’t want to trade places with them, but who knows what they will do. Our belief is that they will be forced to drop the price of the PS3 sooner, rather than later, in order to remain competitive.
Well, I certainly hope that Sony will get that price cut. Having read through all of Greenberg’s remarks, it’ll be interesting to see what Sony’s response to all this is gonna be. Price cut *hint hint* but that’s just my hopeful thinking.
