Activision expects PS3 to exceed Xbox 360 growth this year, Wii still on top

PS3 - Image 1The rivalry continues. Nintendo’s Wii may be top of the charts, but Activision CEO Mike Griffith expects the PS3 to see more growth than the Xbox 360 in the Western Hemisphere during 2008. More in the full article.

PS3 vs Xbox 360 - Image 1In a conference call after posting its 3rd quarter earnings, Activision‘s CEO, Mike Griffith talks about their expectations for console hardware growth in Europe and North America. The Xbox 360 is expected to grow by an additional 6 to 7 million units by the end of the year, but the PS3  ought to grow by 8 million.

Though both may experience more growth, they still don’t quite compare to the hot-selling Wii, which is expected to grow by another 15 million units. Griffith also mentions that handhelds will grow by as much as 24 million, though he didn’t break it down to PSP and DS individually.

The holidays are coming and things are looking up for the most powerful console in the market. Couple that with a strong holiday lineup, the PS3 can expect a merry Christmas.
