Additional Useful Tips And Tricks For Elder Scrolls IV
Here’s an addition to the list of tricks and tips that you can try out when playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This may be very useful to new players or those who are simply, err, not that good with the game.
Item duplication: This trick works with or without the auto-update/patch. You need to be equipped with any arrows equal to the number of “duplicates” you want to be made. For example, you need 20 arrows to be able to duplicate 20 healing potions. If you are new to duping, try testing this out with 5 arrows and 1 potion, just to see how it works.
The first step to duping is equipping arrows of any type then punching and entering your inventory screen before you get done swinging. Any attack would do, or even a spell. Then click “unequip” on the arrows you have acquired earlier. The game would tell you that “you cannot do that right now” — but DONT EXIT INVENTORY JUST YET!! Drop the item/s you wish to duplicate and exit the inventory. The game will dupe in multiples but don’t dupe too many items at once or the game freezes.

Constant effect: Duping is required to do this trick. Here, you can permanently add the effects – good or bad – a magical item gives you. Bear in mind, though, that constant effect is IRREVERSIBLE! To do the constant effect trick, follow the same steps in item duplication — this time, however, you will use just exactly two arrows to dupe a magical item you wish you could have permanently. Then, equip one of the copies. You will see in your inventory screen that the copy you’re wearing is grey, and just below that is the second copy you’re not wearing.
Now, get four arrows instead of two. Next, punch and enter the inventory screen before you get done swinging. Click “unequip” on your equipped 4 arrows. The game will tell you that “you cant do that right now”. Again, don’t exit the inventory. Now drop the copy you are NOT WEARING. Notice both will fall from your inventory. If you try to equipping the item now, you can’t. But check out your stats page, you now have that item’s effect on you permamnently.
If items are not sticking to your character, you can reset your Xbox after each item to solve this problem. Another advise is don’t increase your speed, athletics, or acrobatics too high. Two hundred fifty is a good number to start with. If your speed or acrobatics is too high, you can create your own rings that drain speed or acrobatics on self.
Make a Black Soul Gem: Go to a necromancer’s altar with an empty grand soul gem. Place the gem inside the altar and look up at the sky. If you see a faint pink/purple light beaming down on the altar, you’re ready. If not, press the BACK button to wait 24 hours, then look at the sky again. Each altar has its own special day of the week that the light is there. Once the light is on the altar, and the empty grand soul gem is inside, cast SOUL TRAP on the altar and presto! You now have your very own Black Soul Gem.
Make a weapon that kills in 3-5 hits: First, you must gather one Grand Soul contained in a Grand Soul gem or Azura’s Star, one weapon of choice (we recommend that you use Melee weapons), and an access to an Alter of Enchanting (this requires that you have Mage Guild recommendations from all the guilds halls, or have the wizard tower download and fully upgraded ala quest). Then place the following effects on your weapon: Soul Trap for one second on Strike, Drain Health 100 points for one second on Strike, and Weakness to Magic 100% for 3, 4 or 5 seconds (as 3 seconds is 25 charges, 4 seconds is 22 charges, and 5 seconds is 20 charges — use the one you prefer) on Strike.
So how does it work? Every time you hit something, you deal 100 damage to it and apply a 100% weakness to magic. If it lives, hit it again before the weakness to magic wears off. The drain health will continue to get stronger with each hit (100 first hit, 200 second, 300 third, etc). This is because the weakness to magic stacks with each hit. Finally, when your target dies, you will soul trap it, allowing you to refill your weapon. If you have Azura’s Star, you can have an easier time keeping your weapon filled up, as you only have about 20-25 charges or so based on the duration you picked for your weapon. Don’t try hitting something that has reflect magic (Lich, for example), you are going to kill yourself.
Make a weapon that paralyze: Oh yes! You read it right. There is such a trick for making a weapon that can paralyze enemies. The things needed to make such weapon are the same things needed in making a weapon that kills in 3-5 hits – but we recommend that you use a faster melee weapon. Place the following effects on your weapon: Soul Trap for one second on Strike, Drain Fatigue 100 pts for one second on Strike, and Weakness to Magic 100% for 3, 4, or 5 seconds (44 charges at 3 seconds, 35 charges at 4 seconds, 29 charges at 5 seconds) on Strike. Behold, a weapon with paralysis!
The resulting weapon will also kill in 3-5 hits: each time you hit your target, you put a 100% weakness to magic on them if the previous weakness did not wear off. The difference is that you are ripping out your target’s fatigue. A good spell to use in combination with this could be the following: Soul Trap for one second on Touch and Drain Health 100 pts for one second on Touch. After hitting your target a few times and stunning them, cast the mentioned spells to finish your target off and refill your soul gem. Hit the target 6-7 times so that your Drain Health will do 700+ damage and make sure that the target dies. If you opt to use this spell with your paralyze weapon, you can take off the soul trap on your weapon and gain about four more charges.
