After Halo 3, What’s Next for Bungie?

I se the future. A post-Halo future. All eyes are on Bungie as Halo 3 continues its journey to its 2007 launch. A few eyes are locked to a point in time after Halo 3, however, and are asking a very simple question: “What’s next?” One writer for the San Jose Mercury News, Dean Takahashi, speculates on the future for Bungie post-Halo 3.

There seems to be another game – or two – slumbering beneath the developer’s covers. Halo project lead Jason Jones and programmer Chris Butcher are working on something new outside of the Halo universe. And another part of the Bungie family is reportedly hard at work on yet another potential title. But when asked about it by Takahashi back during E3, Xbox exec Peter Moore simply said “I don’t know that Bungie has a second team.”

We don’t know what to make of it. Bungie can be tight-lipped about its projects when it wants to be.

How about Halo 4? How would you react if the likely bet was that the series would wrap up with the 3rd installment? Takahashi writes about how Spong.com “went out on a limb” and speculated that 1) Halo 3 would be the last Halo and 2) that Microsoft was likely to announce a new, non-Halo Bungie game during the X06 event in Barcelona later this month (probably one of those games that parts of the Bungie team have been working on?). Takahashi’s inclined to agree, saying that Jones isn’t exactly a “sequel” kind of guy.

We don’t know what to say. The prospects that this could be the last hurrah for Halo brings tears to the Halo fan’s eyes, true. But then, the “sleeping” game (or games) that Bungie may or may not be working on intrigue us more. Bungie’s silence on both Halo and post-Halo is quite deafening in this regard.
