An interesting PS3 auction anecdote with Phil Harrison
A few weeks before the Sony PlayStation 3 was released in UK stores, a lucky fan of the rock band Marillion was able to grab a unit signed by the band members through a charity auction.
The small concert was attended by 2,500 enthusiastic fans who came to enjoy a night of good music while helping out the band garner funds for their favorite charities. In the late goings of the show, the band auctioned several autographed items including a shirt that went out for 650 euros.
What happened next was a total surprise. It was revealed that Sony boss Phil Harrison was in attendance and was invited to stake a bid. Instead, Harrison offered to auction off a brand-new Sony PS3 paid “from his own pocket.” The starting price was announced by Marillion’s keyboard player at 100 euros. Everyone was assured that the machine would be autographed and the proceeds will go to charity.
Several bids were heard from the crowd, and the bidding began in earnest. Harrison decided to join in the fun and went to the stage, took the microphone and restarted the bidding at 600 euros.
It was apparent that the bidders were taken aback as only one was left staking a bid at the floor price of the game console. After a few uncomfortable seconds of persuading the crowd to bid, the machine was sold to the sole bidder.
The crowd was then compelled to leave the venue as it was announced that Marillion had left the scene during the bidding. Harrison and Marillion declined to give comments about the event.
