An MMORPG to Merge Reality TV and Gaming? Say Hello to X Quest
As strange as it sounds, according to Reuters it’s coming to Xbox360 and Playstation 3. The X Quest series will play out simultaneously with an X Quest television show produced by Imagine Television and aired on Fox (no surprise there). Spectrum MediaWorks created the X Quest franchise for the sole purpose of spanning various media. Not only will X Quest be accessed through TV and gaming, viewers will be able to participate through the internet and mobile phones.
While the premise may sound a little off, there are big names associated with this production. Bungie founder and Halo co-creator Alex Seropian and director Ron Howard are helping with the production of the game and television series respectively. However, an anonymous MMO developer is working on the gaming aspect of X Quest, so what type of ‘gaming’ this experience will offer has yet to be seen.
For those who are interested in the show’s premise, it is a mesh of a game show and interactive game. The series will by set in NASA-type future reality, where two teams of seven contestants climb into a space simulator and spend a month trying to complete virtual missions. As for the interactivity, those playing the X Quest game will be able to interact with the TV show participants and can thus affect the show and possibly appear on a future season. Color me excited.
X Quest does not have a release date as of yet, but both the game and show are slated to premiere in the first half of 2007.
