Analyst: PS3 Still Ahead Of The Wii
A leading analyst believes that despite all the buzz surrounding Nintendo’s Wii (and dissenting opinions like this one), the Playstation 3 will still outsell it by as much as 60 percent.
Yuta Sakurai, an analyst at Nomura Securities in Tokyo, says the PS3 will sell 71 million units by 2011 compared with an estimated 40 million units for the Wii.
Sakurai is positive about the Wii’s appeal, though, saying, “Software developers are increasingly interested in creating games for these Nintendo platforms.”
The analyst was quoted in a Businessweek article on Nintendo which, while generally shedding a positive light, added, “Hardcore gamers will probably prefer the raw power of PS3. And for all the positive vibes right now, the Wii isn’t expected to outsell the PS3.”
A possible reason for this analysis might be the fact that the PS3 already has a pretty strong lineup of exclusive titles like Final Fantasy XIII. These titles will no doubt guarantee that fans will buy a PS3. However, Sony really has to cut down on the PS3’s pricew tag if it hopes to dominate the next-gen console market. $499 for the low-end version of the PS3 is still enough reason to turn off more than a few gamers from buying the console.
2011 is still five years off though. In that time the PS3’s retail price will undoubtedly fall a few times, and more and more games will be made available for the Wii. Only time will eventually tell which console will outsell the others.
