Super Mario Galaxy may have sold 500,000 copies in its first week but research analyst Michael Comeau believes that this amount doesn’t live up to expectations. Despite describing the game as the “biggest Wii release ever”, he says the game’s numbers are disappointing.

He calls the game a “borderline failure” when compared to the likes of other big releases this year. He compares Super Mario Galaxy directly to Halo 3 saying:

I think at the very least you would have seen this game sell a million copies in the first week. […] If it doesn’t sell at least 3 million by year end I would consider that a huge disappointment.

He believes that the disparity comes from the nature of the Wii’s audience itself, saying that they aren’t the type to go out “and buy a lot of games” unlike the Xbox 360 audience which caters to the more hardcore gamers (a sentiment he has shared before).

He also believes that Super Mario Galaxy‘s numbers might affect developers’ confidence in making games for the Wii. If a Wii blockbuster that received so much hype would pull in such low numbers, it wouldn’t inspire a lot of confidence for the success of third party games.
