Following up on Ubisoft’s announcement that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in development, project designer Michel Ancel gave out some updates on the game’s current status during a recent Montpellier in Game session.

It’s a bit of a mixed bag, depending on how you look at it. On the one hand, Ancel says development is coming along fine. On the other, it’s probably not going to be released any time soon.

There’s a reason for the long development, though. Ancel says that he’s keeping the development team small “to preserve creativity and so the game doesn’t become a commercial product, so that is has soul.”

He’s also apparently working on a new toolset that should help make 3D games a more viable project for small teams, which has also made the process even slower. “It takes a bit longer,” Ancel said, “but we’re very keen to use this system with this game, because it’s an ambitious game and we want to create something exceptional.”
