When reading Nintendo's press release, one could suspect they just chose the name in order to come up with a few cheesy puns. "Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?"
Yes, what does it mean? Seriously, if Nintendo wants to get away from their childish image, a term like "Wii" is probably the wrong choice, as it sounds exactly like that. But they might have a point when they say "Because, it's really not about you or me.
It's about Wii."
Nintendo emphasizes the "away from the crowd"/casual mentality of their new console like no other company, especially with the new name. They want everyone to play with their console, even if they're not a gamer. They want to unite people, put them together into a greater community. If everything turns out the way it should, "Wii will change everything."
