Another buzzer beater: Amazon takes down PS3/Wii pre-orders
There goes the neighborhood. And with ’em are the PS3 and Wii pre-orders of Amazon. Yep, the online shopping giant itself has conceded to the downward spiral of supply and demand curves. With this weekend’s console launch orgy, this bit of news isn’t a welcome sign at all. Seems like things have reached critical levels now.
Amazon is taking a safe route and trying to avoid a possible FUBAR situation. What with GameStop‘s recent submission to Sony‘s allocation-shortage, the online mega-store is closing its doors to PS3 pre-orders and discontinuing those for the Wii. A post by an Amazon staffer states their defense:
This was not an easy decision, but we made the decision because we want to ensure that we can fulfill all of the orders that are placed within a reasonable time period. We understand your frustration, but we believe it would be extremely irresponsible if we took pre-orders for product that we may not be able to deliver until 2007.
While there isn’t any guarantee of pre-orders being delivered until next year, the good news is that, for those who have pre-ordered a Wii, they would be able to get their consoles “shortly after launch”. As for the PS3… Well, better wait for more info from Amazon. Because quite frankly, despite the above statement in the Amazon forums, the Admins still haven’t released any official word yet.
Should we raise the alarms now and run around the street pulling the hair out of our scalps? You could if you want to. But we suggest you better sit tight for more info as they drop in.
