Australian classrooms getting some DS love
Here’s something that would make you wish you were back in primary school.
While adults try to pry kids away from game consoles (handhelds included), teachers of Greenhills Primary School in Melbourne are doing what was then unthinkable – encouraging kids to play videogames while in school. God bless Dr. Kawashima‘s Brain Training game, grades five and six students now have a reason to play their Nintendo DS during class hours. (What? you’d think the teachers would let these kids play with Metroid Prime?)
The cool teacher who’s getting praises for the initiative is James Penson. He wrote to Nintendo proposing a classroom trial of Brain Training. Nintendo liked the idea and sent 40 DS units.
The trial got good grades from the teachers, and needless to say, it was a big hit to the students. They are one in saying that learning Math becomes an enjoyable activity. Grade six student Phoebe said it best, “You get to play fun maths games and it is not boring.”
Now, if we can only talk teachers into using Phoenix Wright as general reference in law school…
