Sony PlayStation Portable handheld - Image 1A new test build for the Mac emulator Basilisk II PSP Port was recently rolled out by homebrew developer J.F. Marked as the sixth test release of the program, it cleans up a lot of the old code from its previous versions and includes several major changes to its audio and video features.

The developer mentioned that the current build now uses an 8-bit video format for its graphics. This was directly translated from the code using the 4-bit video format, which leads us to believe that the initial graphics problem encountered was tied to the PSP’s GU_PSM_T4 handling. J.F. explained that fixing this issue will be one of the higher priorities in future updates.

Anyway, here’s a quote taken directly from the developer regarding the details of Basilisk II PSP Port test release 6:

This one has the minor cleanup of the audio… should sound better for apps that do distinct clips instead of streaming. Major change – I got tired of looking for what was wrong with 4 bit video, so I did a hack – I convert the four bit video into 8 bit and then use the 8 bit code. Works fine. One thing this tells me – the Mac is drawing the four bit correctly, so the problem is with the GU_PSM_T4 handling. I can’t spot the problem… I’ll leave it for another time. This at least makes it where you can read the damn display so initial installs and four bit games should be usable now.
