Now a lot of players have been asking about this game and what it is really about. Sure, we know about Rapture and the great discord that has been occurring there, but McDonagh pointed out the underlying mechanic in the gameplay: Choice.
This game is all about choice. That’s the central and most important principle of this game.
I think when dealing with narrative you always have to have gameplay ramifications. If the story has no relevance to gameplay people just don’t care about out. So what we’ve tried to do is make those choices profoundly powerful and moral. I think that it’s easily been the most challenging part of this game; getting that right.
Now to further expound on this he gave an example of the moments that players have to make difficult decisions due to these choices. This game looks to really affect players, not only in the balls-to-the-wall type of high but on a subtler sense as well.
I think what we’ve done is to effectively ask players to make an unbelievably difficult decision, and express that in a very powerful way. I don’t know if you noticed, but one of the things that’s really amazing is when the Big Daddy dies the Little Sister mourns him.
If you watch them walking around she sings to him, she skips along behind him and, you know, it’s uncomfortable; we’re really pressing buttons.
Game designers talk a lot about talking to gamers on an emotional level, and that’s what I think we’re trying to do; engage you in this world, engage you with the fate of people in it and ask you some difficult questions about how you’re going to interact with these people. We’ll have to wait and see if we’ve actually managed to pull that off.
With that said, a lot of people have been harping about picking this game up when it comes out. The common consensus from most of these people is the fact that this will only appeal to hardcore gamers. After writing this, I’m personally not so sure about that assumption any longer. Still, we’ll have to wait till it’s released before we can give the final verdict on this game. If you’d like to read the full interview, feel free to click on our read link.
