Black mode appears on all icons in iOS 18 beta 3– sort of a gimmick.
The dark mode is now available for third-party app icons in iOS 18 beta 3.
Apple’s iOS 18 beta 3 includes a change which forces dark mode icons on every app with a simple color scheme, for better or for worse. You may have noticed if you’ve been using the iOS 18 beta that only Apple-branded icons were given the dark mode treatment. In iOS 18 beta 3 that changes, with an algorithmic attempt to apply the dark mode to all icons — as long they are simple enough. Dark mode fans have spent years customizing the iPhone Home Screen to achieve a uniform look. They’ve used custom launchers and alternate icons. This process is made easier by the introduction of a toggle in iOS 18, which allows users to switch from light to dark mode icons. However, it was not clear what third-party applications would need to do in order to participate. Apple doesn’t seem to be giving developers many options. They can either submit dark mode-friendly icons, or they will force them upon you. This is a beta version, but it has a wide range of results. The automatic dark mode works best with icons that are made up of a single letter or glyph. Some apps with complex icons will end up with gray or white pixels around the edges. These pixels stand out against a dark background. Some apps, such as the game Limbo, could be inverted. Icons that have already been blacked out are not altered. Apps that use colorful images like most game icons are left alone, or a dark filter applied. Apple is making an early attempt to ensure that icons in dark mode are uniform, so bugs are expected. The results will be better once iOS 18 is released and developers are able to ship new icons that target the new dark and filter modes. This means Google users will not have to wait until 2030 to see dark mode icons in their apps. The dark mode icons are a new feature in beta 3, and they are separate from the tinted icon that has been available since beta 1. The tinted icons forced all widgets and icons to conform. Apple is expected release iOS 18 shortly following the iPhone 16 announcement. A public beta version of the operating system is expected in July.
