Blu-ray PS3’s Best Weapon Against Xbox 360?
Just as Sony’s PlayStation 3’s worldwide launch draws nearer, the speculation about how much better it would be against current consoles in the market gets wilder. Now, analysts from Wedbush Morgan Securities believes that the PS3 will be a notch higher than its perceived best competition, the Xbox 360, due to its blu-ray feature.
With it’s high-definition movie-watching capability, they said console is expected to capture the interest of not a few consumers. The analysts are banking on this theory with the observation that PS2 did very well during it’s time because it became an avenue for users to enjoy watching movies from its built in DVD player – a format that during those days wasn’t as common. The blu-ray technology is currently on the verge of replacing DVD, just like the way the latter booted the VHS out of the picture; the pattern doesn’t end there because Sony’s latest console is also on the brink of providing the same innovative perk its most recent predecessor (PS2) gave during its days. A move that’s more of a marketing strategy than a coincidence Wedbush Morgan Securities claims.
It seems a bold prediction since consoles are bought mainly for the gaming experience it provides (unless you’re the type that’s mainly interested on simply displayiing this stuff); thus it seems more sensible to use features that enhances the gaming experience as the barometer for its success. But taking into consideration that more and more consumers are looking for gadgets, equipments, and tools that can multi-task, it doesn’t seem to be too farfetched.
“We expect the dominant console at the end of the next cycle to be the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), primarily due to our assessment that Sony will win the high definition DVD format war,” the report explains. Still it won’t necessarily kick Xbox 360’s butt because according to them, they “expect MicrosoftÂ’s Xbox 360 to enjoy a first mover advantage for the next two years, capturing approximately 42 percent of US and European combined next generation hardware unit sales through 2007.”
Clearly, Microsoft is taking this aspect of console features seriously as they are also about to to release an HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 later this year. It seems pretty absurd to predict that a gaming console will win over its counterpart not because it’s proven to be a better gaming machine, but because it offers more uses. That’s like saying ice cream is better than cake as dessert because it has a cone right? Anyway, let’s just wait and see.
