Brand-new MMORPG for PS3?

In a recent interview, Final Fantasy XI developer Hiromichi Tanaka of Square Enix, Ltd. dropped some hints that his company may have a completely new MMORPG in the works especially for the Sony Playstation 3. Specific details aren’t forthcoming, but Tanaka implies that the new game will be available for both the PS3 and the Windows Vista platform. Several new game titles for the PS3 are expected to be announced at the E3 Expo in May 2006, six months ahead of the console’s actual release this fall.

Porting FF from Windows to PS3 presents many challenges, Tanaka said. Because the two platforms are very different, a PS3 version could be in development for anywhere from 24 to 36 months (unlike the XBox, which has much in common with its PC cousin). For this reason, Tanaka suggests that a whole new game will most likely be developed. Whether this will be an addition to the FF series, or something else altogether is not yet clear, however.
