Bungie: Halo 3 weapons based on reality
For those of us still knee-deep in Master Chief‘s last adventure on the Xbox 360, Halo 3, here’s a little backgrounder on the massive arsenal of hardware that makes up the green-armored dude’s weaponry: they’re all based on real technology. Yep, the guys over at Bungie Studios made sure that every weapon it squeezed into the game was grounded in reality, no matter how incredible or planet-destroying (Spartan Laser, I’m looking at you).
In fact, let’s take the Spartan Laser for example. It’s big, it’s heavy, and it charges a laser that can pretty much take out anything its crosshair touches upon – that is, if you can get it to charge a shot fast enough. What are the chances of us seeing a similar weapon being developed (and being used) in reality? Definitely slim, but it’s possible – as the Spartan Laser itself was based on an already existing laser, called the Galilean Telescope Beam Expander.
Bungie happened upon this awesome-sounding device while browsing through journals dedicated to upcoming military hardware and weaponry, as well as shows such as Future Weapons. Tom Doyle, a weapons designer for Halo 3, sums it up quite well: “A lot of our stuff actually is moored in reality. It’s like Star Trek — it’s pseudoscience.”
While we all know that it could be years, even centuries before we could see something just as hardcore as Master Chief’s cadre of Covenant-slaying weaponry, it’s good to know that it’s possible. You can check out the entire article that talks more about the weapons in Halo 3 at the read link below.
