Bungie talks Halo 3 vehicle AI, graphical enhancements, Legendary Edition price tag

Apart from the US$ 30 discrepancy between the actual cost and the estimated retail price of the Halo 3 Legendary Edition package, all’s going well in terms of Halo 3‘s development. In the latest weekly update from developer Bungie, it has been revealed that improvements are being mad to the game’s vehicular AI.

Actually, the AI is not for the vehicles themselves, but for the drivers. Here’s what Bungie has to say about the improved AI:

The AI improves the predictive targeting of an AI gunner, so that now, he’s going to shoot where he thinks youÂ’re looking, with a frightening degree of accuracy. Balancing that in Campaign would have been problematic in Halo: CE or Halo 2, since it would have been too powerful a weapon, but in Halo 3, there is simply so much going on, and so many targets to focus on, that improving it is actually necessary to stop the game being too hard.

It works especially well in letting you steer the vehicle and the camera to tempt the gunner into targeting an individual. So if a brute is giving you a really hard time, lobbing Brute Grenades, for example, you can easily cause the gunner to pick that guy as your next target with simple steering and looking.

And it doesnÂ’t matter if heÂ’s in the center of a group of five or six Grunts. If youÂ’re aiming correctly, the AI gunner will know the difference and concentrate on the Brute, not because itÂ’s a Brute, but because youÂ’ve chosen him as the target.

The AI’s not the only thing getting a tune-up, too. Other vehicle behaviors have also seen vast improvements along with a few more graphical enhancements. To read all about them as well as some of the reasoning behind the Legendary Edition’s new price tag, click on the “Read” link below.
