CacheLogic unveils VelociX in GDC

CacheLogic announced in the GDC yesterday that it has come up with a solution that will ease the pain of having to wait long to download games and demos in console networks. The company introduced VelociX, a new system of melding traditional CDN technology with peer-to-peer techniques to make for faster download times and less lag in its networks.

The company says that the demand was spurred by the heralding of the next-generation of games which have better graphics with correspondingly bigger file sizes. Larger files that come in gigabytes of data take longer to download through traditional systems and that builds up download traffic which causes stress on the networks (and consumers) when big titles are up.

CacheLogic claimed that their low latency network will be able to deliver fast downloads even at peak hours. They said that it also reduces the risk of file download corruption and fends off expensive retransmission of data. More importantly, they say, is the fact that the service remains the same regardless of location.

The product is offered to developers and publishers who want to lead the way in digital distribution. The “asset-based” pricing remains vague to the layman, and it is unclear if any developers have made a move to acquire the technology just yet.

We’ll keep you posted on this exciting development.
